Four firetrucks rushed to the west side of 116th and Broadway at around 5:30 p.m. after a passer-by thought he or she smelled natural gas coming out of a manhole.

Firefighters determined that the smell coming out of the manhole was from the sewer. The manhole is located near the entry into the subway on the corner of the street.

"Sewer gas comes out of those things all of the time," one FDNY representative said. He said the steam-like sewage smell wafts up from the subway below.

The firefighters checked the adjacent Barnard Quad buildings before leaving the scene.
